The Oregon Supreme Court desegregates when Adrienne Nelson becomes the first Black judge on any OR appeals court. For 161 years, voters here have elected only white governors, senators, US representatives, attorneys general, secretaries of state, and Portland mayors.

Students of color stage a sit-in at Roosevelt High School to protest falling diversity and rising inequality. White St. Johns residents average more than 3x higher income than Black residents.

If these kids stay in school, they’ll fall further behind. The more educated a Black person achieves in this state, the more underpaid they get. Black residents with a PhD make more than $33,500 less than white peers.
